The San Francisco Chronicle recently did a great story on the use of foot patrols in the Mission district of San Francisco. The foot patrols have been a focus of crime prevention and gang-violence reduction in the area for the past year. In Mission and other targeted areas, increased foot patrols are credited with a 50% drop in homicide citywide. In Mission, specifically, there have been no homicides so far this year, compared with 8 by this time last year.

Officers who participate in the foot patrols try and engage community members, talk with gang members, and build relationships with local business owners. This type of community outreach and communication is what officers credit for a host of community improvements and crime reduction.
